Discover the traditional techniques behind medieval and early Renaissance panel painting in this intensive two-day practical workshop.
Traditional Egg Tempera • Water Gilding • Decorative Techniques
Working on an individually prepared traditional gesso panel, participants will experience the historical process from bole application and water gilding with genuine gold or moon gold through agate burnishing, decorative punchwork and egg tempera painting.
On the second day, participants may choose to continue with traditional egg tempera painting or concentrate more deeply on decorative punchwork and ornamentation of the gilded surface.
The workshop is suitable for painters, gilders, picture framers, conservators and anyone with a particular interest in historical painting and decorative techniques.

Private 1:1 Workshops
Traditional Gilding & Historical Painting — Tailored to You
For those wishing to explore traditional gilding and historical painting techniques in greater depth, I offer private 1:1 workshops at my studio in the beautiful rural surroundings of Paddy’s Flat, Northern NSW.
Unlike a scheduled group workshop, your private workshop is individually tailored to your experience, interests and what you would most like to learn. You may choose to concentrate on one particular technique or combine several areas over one or two days.
Depending on your interests, your workshop may include traditional water gilding with genuine gold leaf, gesso and bole preparation, burnishing, ornament punching, sgraffito, pastiglia, egg tempera painting and other historical decorative techniques.
Whether you are completely new to these crafts, already practising gilding or painting, or would simply like to deepen a particular skill, we can create a programme specifically for you.
Private 1:1 Tuition
One day — $1,150
Additional day — $695
The fee includes private tuition from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm, all general workshop materials, including 9 leaves of genuine gold and one individually prepared 20 × 20 cm lightweight European poplar plywood panel, traditionally hand-coated with 12 layers of gesso and sanded ready for your workshop.
As every private workshop is individually tailored, additional gold leaf or prepared panels can be added where required.
For those travelling from further afield, simple camping on the property with a hot shower may be possible by prior arrangement.
Bookings
A $200 deposit secures your workshop dates, with the remaining balance due two weeks before your workshop.
