Medieval Gold & Tempera Painting

Explore historical painting techniques familiar from icons and medieval panel paintings.

Discover the traditional techniques behind medieval and early Renaissance panel painting in this intensive two-day practical workshop.

Traditional Egg Tempera • Water Gilding • Decorative Techniques

Working on an individually prepared traditional gesso panel, participants will experience the historical process from bole application and water gilding with genuine gold or moon gold through agate burnishing, decorative punchwork and egg tempera painting.

On the second day, participants may choose to continue with traditional egg tempera painting or concentrate more deeply on decorative punchwork and ornamentation of the gilded surface.

The workshop is suitable for painters, gilders, picture framers, conservators and anyone with a particular interest in historical painting and decorative techniques.
